Windwaker turn the pressure of modern life and always being watched into mind-bending metal on Smile, You’re On Camera.

Australia’s Windwaker have never been okay with doing it someone else’s way. On Smile, You’re On Camera, they amp up the intensity to confront the personal sacrifices, existential doubts, and manufactured divisions that define life in an increasingly performative world. They take that pressure of being watched and transform it into fuel for some of their most zealous and volatile songs yet.

Featuring vocalist Liam Guinane, guitarist Justin Keurntjes, bassist Indey Salvestro, drummer Chris Lalic, and synths and samples specialist Connor Robins, Windwaker have built their identity around musical unpredictability. Their sound is a constant collision of stadium-sized hooks, backbreaking guitar riffs, hip-hop-inspired flow, electronic glitches, and over the top vocals that move with ease between melody throat-ripping aggression.

Following the leap from 2022’s Love Language to 2024’s HYPERVIOLENCE, the band continue to expand their perimeter. The latter album produced “SIRENS,” which has amassed millions of Spotify streams, while earning critical praise for Windwaker’s capacity to balance brutal metalcore with melody. On the new album, however, the battle extends beyond the mosh pit. The songs function as snapshots of growth, insecurity, and the struggle to remain authentic in a culture obsessed with appearances and looking for online approval from complete strangers.

The track “closer” captures one of the record’s central dilemmas: whether to abandon a dream for the security of a conventional life or continue fighting for something that’s already demanded everything. Windwaker turn that question into a post-industrial alt-metal anthem of arena-ready choruses and earth-shaking breakdowns. As the band explains, the song explores rejection and self-doubt while championing the strength needed to simply keep moving forward. “do or die” takes aim at a different kind of pressure, pairing heavy guitar grooves with bouncy, hip-hop-inflected vocals, seductive falsetto, and ferocious screams.

Beneath its earworm-ready hooks lies a pointed critique of political polarization and culture-war rhetoric. Windwaker argue that manufactured divisions distract people from the economic inequalities and leadership failures affecting their lives. Meanwhile, “dna” turns inward, examining identity, self-worth, and the exhausting pursuit of validation in a social media-driven world as the song wrestles with the fear that destructive habits and personal flaws might be permanently hardwired into us.

Throughout Smile, You’re On Camera, Windwaker embrace contradiction as a creative engine, coming out with songs both abrasive and accessible, introspective and explosive. In a world where everyone seems to be performing for an invisible audience, the band are asking what remains when the cameras are rolling and the masks finally come off.
