On Dream Chaser, Willie Nelson continues exploring emotional distance, perseverance, and human connection through the eyes of the everyman, including a song co-written with Bob Dylan.

At 92 years old, Willie Nelson is still outpacing artists half his age, releasing records like he’s driving down a highway that never ends. And like most of his albums, Dream Chaser, his 79th solo studio album and astonishing 156th release overall, never feels like a legacy lap. It feels like another mile marker from a singer and songwriter who long ago turned endurance into an art form.

The album drifts through themes that have defined Nelson’s songwriting for decades. There’s the restless love, the hard-earned wisdom, loneliness softened by humor, and the strange poetry of life spent in motion. But Dream Chaser also carries with it some late-career reflection. These are songs written by artists who know exactly how much road is behind them and still keep one hand on the wheel as they look ahead.

The title track, written by Nelson alongside longtime friend Buddy Cannon and songwriter Bobby Tomberlin, sets the tone with quiet conviction. “Dream Chaser” rises like a desert sun creeping across the windshield, all warm acoustics and weathered truth. Nelson’s voice, now more textured than smooth, remains one of country music’s most expressive instruments. Every crack in it has been earned. Cannon continues to serve as Nelson’s ideal creative co-pilot. Over the last 13 years, the pair have built one of the most fruitful late-career partnerships in modern music, delivering nearly 20 albums together. On Dream Chaser, they co-wrote six tracks, several alongside Tomberlin, blending classic country storytelling with themes that feel startlingly current.

One of the album’s highlights is “I Can’t Read Your Mind,” a rare collaboration involving Bob Dylan. In a recent GQ interview, Nelson recalled Dylan bringing him the opening phrase, “I can’t read your mind,” before the pair built out the song’s lyrical skeleton. Cannon later helped shape it into its final form, resulting in a track that feels like two American songwriting giants passing notes the rest of us are lucky to get a glimpse at.

Following recent Grammy nominations for Last Leaf On The Tree and Oh What A Beautiful World, Dream Chaser shows that the Red Headed Stranger is still doing what he’s always done best.
