In a most unlikely pairing, metal's ultimate cosmic explorers Voivod unlock new dimensions of their sound with help from a full orchestra on Symphonique.

After more than four decades spent charting the outer limits of heavy music, Canadian progressive metal visionaries Voivod have discovered yet another frontier. On Symphonique, the band's landmark live collaboration with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, their futuristic anthems are transformed into something even more ambitious for a truly cinematic voyage that feels as grand as the galaxies they've spent years imagining.

Recorded live on June 4, 2025, at Québec City's Grand Théâtre, Symphonique captures Voivod performing a 12-song, 73-minute retrospective alongside a full symphony orchestra. Rather than simply draping strings over familiar material, the project reimagines some of the band's most celebrated songs through expansive orchestral arrangements that amplify the drama, tension, and otherworldly atmosphere already embedded in their music.

The result is striking. Songs that once felt like transmissions from a distant future now unfold with the scope of a science-fiction epic. The orchestra makes no attempt to soften Voivod's jagged edges, instead it enhances them by adding unexpected layers of sound while preserving the band's signature blend of progressive complexity, thrash intensity, and avant-garde experimentation.

What makes Symphonique particularly compelling is how natural it all feels. Metal and classical music have crossed paths countless times before, but few end up sounding like this. Voivod's unconventional songwriting, angular riffs, and already expansive arrangements seem uniquely suited for orchestral interpretation. The Quebec Symphony Orchestra holds its own and becomes an equal partner, helping transform the performance into a one-of-a-kind experience.

Throughout the album, there's a palpable sense of adventure. Voivod have never been a band content to revisit familiar ground, and Symphonique continues that tradition. Every movement feels designed to pull listeners deeper into the band's vast sonic universe, where progressive metal and classical grandeur coexist without compromise.

Drummer and founding member Michel "Away" Langevin sums it up. "This live album with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra is a longtime dream turned reality. Thankfully, we will experience it again in 2027 with the Orchestre symphonique du Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean, right in the region where Voivod formed back in 1983. We wish to take this show across the globe with local orchestras one day, but in the meantime, I hope you will enjoy this epic release. It's the closest we've ever come to sounding like a dystopian sci-fi movie soundtrack, another dream of ours!"
