Tom Morello takes his kid to the school of rock for a lesson in defiance and rebellion on Everyone Gets Everything They Want. Substitute teachers include Serj Tankian, Kneecap, and Beartooth.
Lots of guitar players get exaggerated praise for wielding their guitar like a weapon, but there’s no one that description is more apt for than Tom Morello based on the array of crazy sounds he’s coaxed out of his axe for the last 30+ years. Now, the Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave guitarist is looking toward the next wave for inspiration. On Everyone Gets Everything They Want, his first dedicated solo rock album, Morello teams up with a new generation of rockers, including an especially important creative partner, his 15-year-old son Roman.
The album also features guest appearances from System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian, Irish rap provocateurs Kneecap, and Beartooth. Roman Morello co-wrote five of the songs, and adds his own guitar riffs and solos that help give the record’s sound a shot of youth. It also gives the record a generational twist, with one of rock’s most innovative guitar players sharing creative ground with his teenage son.
For Morello, the album represents a new chapter in a career defined by constant reinvention. As a founding member of Rage Against The Machine, he helped fuse rap, punk, metal, and incendiary political commentary into a sound that challenged the conventions of mainstream rock. Later, Audioslave paired his unmistakable guitar experiments with Chris Cornell’s soaring vocals, producing another era-defining band and a string of hard-rock anthems.
Across both bands, Morello established himself as a guitarist who treats the instrument like a rock and roll laboratory for strange noises, turntable-like scratches, and explosive riffs. That fearlessness landed him on Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest guitar players of all time, not to mention all the records sold and industry awards won.
But Morello’s influence has never been limited to the stage. A Harvard-educated musician, songwriter, and activist, he’s consistently connected his art with political engagement, bringing the same confrontational spirit to rallies and picket lines that he delivers through his amplifier. His career has also stretched into film, television, and philanthropy, reflecting a belief that rock and roll can be both fun and a catalyst for change. With Everyone Gets Everything They Want, Morello brings that worldview into the next era. Roman’s contributions suggest that the guitar-driven exploits that helped define his father’s life and generation can find fresh expression in the hands of the next.
