The Waterboys - Atlantic Rain: The Lost Fisherman's Blues Recordings

With Atlantic Rain: The Lost Fisherman's Blues Recordings, Mike Scott uncovers the lost recordings from the ambitious Fisherman's Blues sessions that changed the course of the Waterboys' career.

Waterboys fans know by now that Mike Scott has always written and recorded way more music than what eventually ends up on his records. With Atlantic Rain: The Lost Fisherman's Blues Recordings, he returns to one of the more creative stretches in his run, revealing what we all assumed, that the sprawling Fisherman's Blues sessions held far more treasure than fans thought they’d ever find. Nearly four decades after the left turn that was Fisherman's Blues reshaped the band's sound and identity, Scott has dug up 25 previously unheard recordings from the marathon 1986 to 1988 sessions. But Atlantic Rain isn't a collection of leftovers.

The scope of the discovery borders on unbelievable. The Waterboys recorded nearly 400 multi-track reels during the Fisherman's Blues era, amassing roughly 150 hours of music. Many reels carried nothing more than cryptic labels like "jam," "unknown," or "soundcheck," leaving them untouched for decades. Revisiting the archives in 2024 and 2025, Scott found forgotten performances that had slipped through his own cracks, from spontaneous improvisations to fully realized songs that could’ve easily found a place on the original 1988 album.

Those discoveries include gems like "Come Back To Galway," "Light Shine On Me," and "Endless Store," alongside the sweeping epic "Man With The Wind At His Heels." Covers of Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, and Willie Nelson reveal just how much the band absorbed American folk traditions while turning them into something all their own.

When Fisherman's Blues first arrived, it caught fans off guard. Trading the dramatic alternative rock of the Waterboys' early years for Irish folk, country, Celtic traditions, and roots music, the album divided audiences before eventually becoming the band's best-selling and arguably their most beloved release. Atlantic Rain paints an even broader picture of that creative explosion, revealing excursions into soul, old-time gospel, and free-flowing instrumental workouts that expand the story rather than attempt to rewrite it.

The deluxe physical editions match the music with a beautifully assembled 54-page book featuring Mike Scott's extensive track-by-track notes, lyrics, and previously unseen photographs. Rather than simply documenting the past, the collection invites listeners into the creative process itself. If Atlantic Rain proves anything, it's that the Fisherman's Blues sessions went deeper than anyone could’ve imagined. And now they’ve finally come to shore.
