On their debut, the Olympians reached for the heavens, but on In Search Of A Revival they come back to earth and discover something deeper in the soil.
Composed, produced, and arranged by bandleader Toby Pazner, In Search Of A Revival trades Greco Roman mythology for something more intimate and human. The cosmic chariots have been parked and in their place is a 17-piece ensemble breathing life into a collection of orchestral soul instrumentals shaped by post pandemic unease, personal reflection, and a restless desire to rebuild. If the first record channeled the righteous pulse of Curtis Mayfield and the rhythmic snap of James Brown, the new one pivots toward the golden glow of the Wrecking Crew era, the echo chamber magic of Gold Star Studios, and the widescreen view of vintage film scores. It’s less about the mountaintop and more about Main Street at dusk, neon flickering, hearts a little bruised but still beating.
Pazner acts as architect and alchemist. Strings, horns, and rhythm section move like a precise machine but still feel organic. The record opens its doors slowly, revealing layers that feel studiously arranged yet warmly lived in. You can sense the connection of the players, a mix of scene heavyweights and longtime friends, each adding brushstrokes to Pazner’s panoramic canvas.
“Strawberry Kiwi” surges forward on dramatic, Axelrod worthy string swells, tension coiling and releasing in cinematic waves. “Thunderball” leans into a moody 6/8 strut, equal parts spy thriller and late-night reverie. “Saraswati Puji” drifts into eastern tinged psychedelia, its textures shimmering like heat off desert pavement. Then comes “Honey Bea,” glowing with sun kissed optimism, a gentle reminder that revival is as much about tenderness as triumph. Throughout, Pazner resists the temptation to overcrowd the frame. Even at its most opulent, the album leaves space for breath, for reflection.
Instrumental soul has always carried a quiet superpower. Without lyrics to guide the narrative, it lets listeners write their own stories into the grooves. In a fractured cultural moment, that openness feels radical. In Search Of A Revival does not dictate what needs saving. It simply builds a sanctuary of sound and lets you step inside. The Olympians may have stepped away from mythology, but the ambition remains mythic. This is music that understands drama, shadow, and light. It honors the lineage of orchestral soul while stretching its silhouette into new shapes.
