The Mayflies USA have returned after a 20+ year hiatus with their new album, Kickless Kids, losing nothing that brought them accolades - the glorious harmonies, the ear worm choruses, and the edgy guitars.
The Mayflies USA, one of Chapel Hill’s cherished indie rock exports, return after a 23-year hiatus with Kickless Kids, their fourth album and first since their breakup in 2002. This reunion comes after a decade of occasional shows, including their performance at Yep Roc’s 25th anniversary celebration in 2022. The album is a nod to their classic sound, echoing the power pop classics that helped define them in the '90s. With standout tracks like “Calling the Bad Ones Home” and “Cabbagetown,” Kickless Kids plays like a “best of” compilation of brand new songs, showcasing the band’s knack for creating infectious choruses, lush harmonies, and tight guitar work.
Formed in 1996, the Mayflies USA were part of the Chapel Hill indie scene that birthed bands like Archers of Loaf and Polvo. Their early records, including Summertown (a modern power pop staple), caught the attention of critics, and their sound drew comparisons to the Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, and Guided By Voices. Their current reunion was set in motion by guitarist Matt Long’s near-death experience in 2022 after a serious illness. Faced with the reality of time slipping away, Long, alongside bassist Adam Price, guitarist Matt McMichaels, and new member Tony Stiglitz, decided to bring their new project to life. The result is a 12-song collection that balances youthful energy with a newfound maturity.
Produced by Tim Harper, known for his work with the Connells, Kickless Kids was created in an organic, piecemeal fashion that echoes the band’s influences from the '60s and '70s. This isn’t a rushed comeback however, it’s a labor of love, captured in a series of laid-back sessions. McMichaels notes the difference between their past and present selves: “We’ve learned how to play now. I think we’re a really good rock band.” This album marks a powerful return to form, blending their signature sound with a sense of urgency that only time can provide. Fans of classic melodic alternative rock will find much to celebrate in Kickless Kids, an album that proves sometimes, the best things take time.
