On Unbound And Dangerous, the Doors’ John Densmore and Robby Krieger revisit the band’s concert archives for a newly mixed collection of explosive live performances.
The Doors bring the volatility of their concert years into focus on Unbound And Dangerous, a new live collection assembled by guitarist Robby Krieger, drummer John Densmore, and longtime engineer Bruce Botnick. Drawing from the recordings behind Absolutely Live, the album gives those performances a fresh sequence and newly remixed sound, putting the band’s blues roots and appetite for musical adventure at the center.
Most of the material comes from the 1970 Roadhouse Blues tour, when Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Krieger, and Densmore were supporting Morrison Hotel. Concert recordings from New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Detroit form the collection’s foundation. “Soul Kitchen” reaches back to the band’s second show at Hollywood’s Aquarius Theatre on July 21, 1969. Together, the selections create a concert experience built from several nights of the band’s history.
The sequence moves from “Dead Cats, Dead Rats” into “Break On Through (To The Other Side),” with “When The Music’s Over” opening the door to the group’s extended explorations. “Roadhouse Blues,” “Back Door Man,” and “Crawling King Snake” underline the blues connection, while “Five To One” and “Light My Fire” bring familiar favorites into the program. Near the finish, Morrison’s cries of “Bring out your dead!” introduce a roughly 15-minute performance of “The End.”
New liner notes let the three collaborators consider the reputation behind the title. Densmore remembers Morrison’s urge to challenge boundaries; Krieger questions how dangerous a rock band really was amid the upheaval of the era; Botnick recalls audiences arriving hungry for excitement. Those different perspectives give Unbound And Dangerous a personal connection to the people who made the music.
