The Brains capture psychobilly lightning and bring to life an out-of-control beast with Crazy Monster, and they are clearly its master.
There’s no stopping Montreal’s undead kings of psychobilly the Brains who return with Crazy Monster, a high-voltage blast of punk rock fury and macabre swagger. It’s a righteous slab of rock that no doubt confirms their place as one of the scene’s most crucial, blood-pumping forces.
Still led by their unshakeable ringleader Rene D La Muerte (guitarist, vocalist, and master of ceremonies) the Brains tear through Crazy Monster like a hearse barreling down Route 666. Opener “Evil” sets the tone with its razor-sharp guitar riffs, unyielding upright bass, and a voice that sounds like it just clawed its way out of the grave. It’s pure horror-punk theater, delivered with full-throttle commitment and plenty of twists and turns along the way.
But Crazy Monster isn’t just some same old, same old rehash. It’s like a monster movie marathon of music, demented and cinematic, with standout moments like “Feel No Pain” and “One More Time” expanding the band’s already murderous toolkit. There are hints of surf rock, ‘50s rockabilly, and even spaghetti western vibes beneath the controlled chaos, all unified by the fact that the Brains know exactly who they are and what they’re here to do.
Over the years, the Brains have built their own haunted house within the punk scene. Born in Montreal’s underground, they earned their bones with relentless touring across North America and Europe and albums like The Monster Within and Out In The Dark, which put horror tropes into tunes that showed an unbridled love of all things loud and undead. Now with Crazy Monster, they’ve turned the amps to 13 and made something truly monstrous: an album that’s as ferocious as it is fun, as grim as it is groovy. Welcome back to the crypt.
