Tate McRae - So Close To What??? (deluxe)

The deluxe edition of Tate McRae’s So Close To What is confrontational and cathartic, adding five new songs that are the sound of a pop star choosing honesty over diplomacy.

Pop stardom sometimes turns out to be not everything the pop star expected, and on the deluxe edition of So Close To What, Tate McRae peels back the layers of glitter and lets the bruises show and let us in on a few secrets. Originally released in 2025, McRae’s third album made the Canadian singer one of pop’s most unlikely hitmakers. The new deluxe version expands that world with five additional tracks, including the fiery single “Tit For Tat,” a Top Five smash on the Billboard Hot 100 that shifts the album’s emotional temperature from reflective heartbreak to full-blown confrontation.

McRae built the record alongside an elite circle of pop architects including Ryan Tedder, Blake Slatkin, Lostboy, Emile Haynie, Ilya Salmanzadeh, and Rob Bisel, utilizing sleek production to express diary-level lyrics about healing, identity, and the uneasy thrill of falling in love again. The original album delivered viral moments like “Sports Car,” and “It’s Ok I’m Ok,” which stormed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart. But the deluxe edition shifts the spotlight inward. The new material trades some of the record’s glossy dance-pop energy for slower, more emotionally surgical songs that cut deeper into McRae’s recent experiences.

“Trying On Shoes” opens the bonus material with appropriate flair, its orchestral introduction setting the stage for one of McRae’s most heart-on-sleeve performances. Singing in a softer tone, she sketches the strange rituals of moving on after a breakup, trying on new versions of herself like outfits in her bedroom. “Anything But Love” takes a sharper turn. The chorus moves smoothly while the verses fire off pointed lines about betrayal and dealing with resentment, showing a different side than fans might expect from her. “Nobody’s Girl” swerves the mood again, this time embracing independence. It’s McRae reclaiming her story, turning heartbreak into victory.

There’s also “Horseshoe,” a reflective ballad that pulls back the curtain on the pressures of fame. Over moody instrumentation, McRae acknowledges the strange paradox of success, where performing in arenas full of cheering fans can be derailed by a single negative thought capable of unraveling the moment. Finally, we get “Tit For Tat,” the explosive moment that already feels like a song that will be part of McRae’s set list for as long as she wants it to.

With more than 12 billion streams and a growing stack of awards, McRae has already proven her chart power. But this new edition of So Close To What reveals something more interesting. It reveals an artist pushing beyond the expectations of pop stardom and discovering new places to take it in the process. If the original album captured the feeling of standing at life’s crossroads, this expanded version shows Tate McRae taking a few fearless steps forward.
