Meredith Moon’s From Here To The Sea expands her folk roots into blues, folk-rock, and jazz textures, showcasing her songwriting at the forefront with an all-star cast of collaborators.

Meredith Moon returns with her third album, From Here To The Sea, a collection that broadens her folk foundation while putting her songwriting in sharper focus. Where her previous album leaned heavily into Appalachian old-time traditions, this one opens the doors wider, weaving in blues, folk-rock, and even flashes of old-time jazz. Produced by Colin Linden in Ontario and Nashville, the album draws an impressive lineup of collaborators including Rebecca Lovell of Larkin Poe, Lillie Mae Rische and Dominic Davis from Jack White’s band, Julian Taylor, Bob Dylan drummer George Receli, and Dobro legend Jerry Douglas.

Moon’s banjo remains a key part of her identity, though here it often slips into the background, adding color while her lyrics and voice drive the songs forward. The opening track, “East City Blues,” welcomes us with fingerstyle guitar and a loping folk-blues groove. Linden’s electric Dobro haunts “Poseidon,” while Moon’s clawhammer banjo shines on the stark ballad “Lulu Gal.” First single “Sapphire Blue” blends acoustic drive with a mysterious edge, telling of a cross-country search for light against looming darkness, Linden’s electric guitar answering Moon’s plaintive vocal. The record closes with “Freight Train,” a late-50s-tinged waltz where Jim Hoke’s saxophones and Linden’s reverb-soaked guitar conjure a moody, timeless atmosphere.

Moon’s journey as a songwriter began early. She started writing songs at eight, grew into a self-taught guitarist at fourteen, and sharpened her craft as a traveling busker across Canada. Her upbringing steeped in folk music, and the influence of her father Gordon Lightfoot, gave her an ear for storytelling. Over time she developed her own contemporary twist on clawhammer banjo and fingerstyle guitar, blending folk-punk urgency with Appalachian tradition.

Now recognized as a unique voice in both the old-time and modern folk worlds, Moon stands out for her willingness to bend tradition without breaking it. From Here To The Sea is both a continuation of her roots and a fearless step into new territory, proof of an artist unafraid to let her songs lead the way.
