There are few stories bigger than The Odyssey, and Christopher Nolan has never been a filmmaker inclined to think small. For his globe-spanning adaptation of Homer’s foundational epic, the director has found a musical partner with an equally outsized sense of scale: three-time Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson.

The Odyssey (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) captures Göransson’s score for Nolan’s mythic action epic, which opened in theaters worldwide on July 17. Released through Mutant in partnership with Universal Pictures and Back Lot Music, the soundtrack is available as a 2x-CD set, with a 3x 140-gram black-vinyl edition also available.

The movie itself represents a technological leap as well as a cinematic one, shot around the world using brand-new IMAX film technology. That ambition gives Göransson an enormous canvas. Homer’s tale of Odysseus, gods, monsters, war, temptation, and the long road home demands music capable of moving between intimate human drama and something approaching the cosmic.

Göransson has spent much of his career building exactly that kind of vocabulary. Born in Linköping, Sweden, in 1984, he first established himself in television, composing for series including Community, New Girl, and The Mandalorian. His work with Childish Gambino also demonstrated a producer’s ear for rhythm, texture, and genre-bending experimentation. Cinema turned Göransson into a major force. His work on Black Panther earned him an Academy Award and Golden Globe recognition, while his collaboration with Nolan on Tenet further cemented his reputation for creating scores that can function as both atmosphere and propulsion. He has since become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after composers, capable of making orchestral music feel muscular, contemporary, and startlingly physical.

That makes The Odyssey a particularly intriguing meeting of sensibilities. Nolan’s filmmaking thrives on scale, tension, and momentum; Göransson’s music has a knack for turning those elements into something visceral. Homer’s ancient voyage may be one of Western literature’s oldest stories, but in their hands, it gets a thoroughly modern frame. The Odyssey is ultimately a story about distance: between home and the unknown, mortal and divine, triumph and survival. Göransson’s score gives that journey its pulse. The gods may be ancient, but the soundtrack arrives sounding up to the task.
