South African saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane explores identity, ancestry and community on LINDA, a deeply personal blend of South African jazz, spiritual jazz, and improvisation.
South African saxophonist and composer Linda Sikhakhane turns inward on LINDA, his self-titled fifth album and one of his most personal recordings yet. Produced by longtime mentor and collaborator Nduduzo Makhathini, the album explores identity, ancestry and purpose while drawing deeply from Sikhakhane’s roots in Umlazi and KwaNongoma.
Across nine tracks, Sikhakhane brings the traditions of South African jazz into conversation with spiritual jazz, contemporary improvisation, and the sounds that surrounded him growing up. His tenor saxophone remains at the center, joined by pianist Cameron Campbell, bassist Conway Campbell and drummer Kabelo Mokhatla, with a series of guests expanding the album’s communal spirit.
That sense of community comes through immediately on “Days Begin To Sing,” featuring vocalist Omagugu, while “Ilanga” brings rapper Zuluboy into the fold. Elsewhere, “Uzalo” features Thabo Sikhakhane, “Izibusiso” welcomes Ovuyonke and “Abalimi Bayovuna” features Phila Dlozi. Rather than separating jazz from the musical traditions that shaped him, Sikhakhane allows them to move naturally together.
LINDA follows 2024’s acclaimed iLadi and continues Sikhakhane’s close creative relationship with Makhathini, while placing an even sharper focus on his own story. The result is an album about understanding where you come from, the people who helped get you there and how those connections continue to shape where you go next.
