Life In Sodom return with Night/Day, a dark and atmospheric collection produced by William Faith that carries their distinctive goth and post-punk sound into its fourth decade.

More than three decades after emerging from Miami’s underground dark music scene, Life In Sodom return with Night/Day, an 11-track album that carries the band’s brooding, introspective vision into a new chapter. The album is their first full-length since 2013’s The World I View, ending a lengthy gap between albums while showing that the darkness surrounding Life In Sodom has never really lifted.

Formed by poet and vocalist Gerrie Brand, Life In Sodom have been operating on the fringes of goth, darkwave and post-punk since the release of their first single, “The Stains,” in 1991. Over the years, the Miami group built an international following with music that favors atmosphere and introspection, a path that has carried them through albums including Charader, The Physical Being, Haunting, And Then We Fall, Alone and The World I View.

On Night/Day, Brand and longtime collaborator Danny Heinze, along with vocalist Virginia Fuillerat, bassist Billy Nightmare and drummer Dino Rio, continue exploring the shadowy territory that has defined the band from the beginning. Songs including “Lonely Rose,” “The Lonely March,” “Heaven’s Gates,” “He Died of Fright,” “Silent Cries” and the title track unfold with a cinematic sense of unease, balancing electronics and post-punk textures with Brand’s darker lyrical perspective.

Adding another layer to the album is producer William Faith, a veteran of the dark alternative world whose work with Christian Death, Shadow Project, Mephisto Walz, Faith and the Muse and the Bellwether Syndicate makes him a natural match for Life In Sodom. His presence complements the band’s established identity while giving Night/Day a spacious, dramatic character suited to its themes of isolation, mortality, faith and longing.

There’s also a welcome connection to the band’s past. “Carousel,” first released on their 1993 debut album Charader, appears alongside the newer material, tying Night/Day to a history that stretches back to the clubs and underground scene of early-’90s South Florida.

After 35 years, Life In Sodom remain proudly outside the mainstream, still creating music for listeners drawn to the darker corners of alternative music. Night/Day sounds like the work of a band that knows exactly where it belongs: somewhere between goth, darkwave and post-punk, with the lights turned low and plenty of shadows left unexplored.
