We remember the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry as he takes his final musical bow on King Perry. Guests include Tricky and Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder.

In August 2021, the world bid farewell to a true legend, Lee "Scratch" Perry. A trailblazer in the world of production, composition, and dub music, Perry's influence on popular music since the 1970s cannot be overstated. Artists ranging from Bob Marley & the Wailers to the Clash, the Beastie Boys and beyond have all been enriched by Perry's one-of-a-kind touch, innovative studio techniques, and unique production style.

Amidst the backdrop of the COVID pandemic, Perry's final album, King Perry, came together thanks to his boundless vision. Produced by Daniel Boyle, the album includes an array of guest performances from Greentea Peng, Shaun Ryder, Tricky, Marta, Rose Waite, and Fifi Rong. Notably, two tracks were co-produced with Tricky, who released Perry's last recorded performances on his False Idols label. It was back in 2014 that Perry began his fruitful collaboration with UK producer Daniel Boyle, resulting in the Grammy-nominated album Back At The Controls and its follow-up, The Black Album. The new album, however, was born from Perry's desire to explore new areas while staying true to his dub roots. Armed with influences ranging from synthwave to drum & bass, Boyle and Perry trade ideas, beats, and lyrics to create a mesmerizing fusion of rhythms, melodies, and voices.

Across a career spanning six decades, Lee "Scratch" Perry left his mark on the music world, with a vast cataloge of albums, productions, and appearances that continue to impress audiences worldwide. From his groundbreaking releases for Island Records and Trojan to his collaborations with Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound and Mad Professor's Ariwa, Perry's influence knows no bounds.

Poignantly, the album's closing track, "Goodbye," serves as Perry's final recorded vocal performance, a fitting farewell from a musical visionary whose impact will be felt for generations to come. Though he may be gone, his music lives on.
