On Muse, John Legend teams with producer Pharrell Williams for a fresh blend of classic soul, gospel, and hip-hop, with a guest appearance from Clipse.
John Legend gives his unmistakable voice a new setting on Muse, joining forces with Pharrell Williams for an album that connects classic soul elegance with contemporary rhythm. Produced entirely by Williams, the record brings gospel, doo-wop, Afrobeat, and hip-hop into a collection inspired in part by Nina Simone, Nat King Cole, and Marvin Gaye.
The partnership grew out of Legend’s appearance on Clipse’s “The Birds Don’t Sing.” That session prompted Williams to imagine a full project built around Legend’s singing, and the longtime friends began recording in Paris in January 2025. Their guiding idea paired the drama of a James Bond soundtrack with modern beats, giving Legend room to explore beyond his best-known piano ballads.
Romance takes several complicated turns. The title track follows an imagined relationship through attraction, devotion, and betrayal, while “Her” draws from Legend’s gospel and doo-wop roots. Horns and strings frame “Get Back,” and “Are You OK?” brings sarcasm into a lovers’ dispute. Clipse join “Bodies on the Floor,” returning the favor with an appearance of their own.
For Legend, the experiment also meant sharing control, including recording songs written entirely by Pharrell. That willingness to trust another writer gives Muse its central creative spark: two established artists finding fresh possibilities together.
