Joe Satriani & Steve Vai - SatchVai: The Sea Of Emotion

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai finally unite as SatchVai for their first collaborative album The Sea Of Emotion, with a guest appearance from Glenn Hughes.

Some musical partnerships take a lifetime to materialize. For Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, the wait is over. The two virtuoso guitarists finally join forces for their first full-length studio album together as SatchVai, The Sea Of Emotion, bringing two of modern rock's most influential players into the same creative arena for an instrumental showcase featuring brand-new songs including a three-part title suite.

Their story began in the early Seventies, when a teenage Vai first took guitar lessons from Satriani. Since then, both musicians have had extraordinary careers, influencing generations of players in the process with their technical brilliance, adventurous compositions and distinctive approaches to the instrument. They've crossed paths countless times over the decades, but a full collaborative studio album remained an unrealized ambition.

As Vai puts it, “We've been planning this since 1973. Just unconsciously.”

The resulting album finds Satriani's instinct for soaring melodies and memorable musical hooks intersecting with Vai's more experimental, expressive guitar vocabulary. Rather than simply trading solos or showcasing their respective technical abilities, the pair embrace their contrasting six string personalities throughout the record.

“The biggest surprise was that we write in completely different ways, and that's what made the project so fun and interesting,” Satriani explains.

The Sea Of Emotion features a collection of original compositions, including the previously released singles “Mayhem,” “Dancing” and “I Wanna Play My Guitar,” the latter featuring legendary singer and bassist Glenn Hughes. The album also includes “Bronco Freight Train” alongside an ambitious three-part title suite that gives the guitarists room to explore the broader musical possibilities of their partnership.

Co-produced by Eric Caudieux, the album boasts a supporting lineup of drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist Marco Mendoza and guitarist Pete Thorn, providing a powerful foundation for the two main players. For fans who’ve followed Satriani and Vai since their respective breakthrough recordings, the collaboration represents a long-awaited dream meeting of two musicians whose careers have been intertwined and helped redefine what a guitar can do.
