Immanuel Wilkins Quartet - Live At The Village Vanguard, Vol. 1

Immanuel Wilkins captures the fire and spontaneity of his acclaimed quartet with Live At The Village Vanguard, a powerful document recorded at one of jazz’s most storied rooms.

Immanuel Wilkins has quickly become one of the most compelling voices in modern jazz, and his first live album captures that momentum in real time. Immanuel Wilkins Quartet: Live At The Village Vanguard, Vol. 1 documents the Grammy-nominated alto saxophonist and composer leading his acclaimed quartet through a powerful set at one of jazz’s most celebrated rooms.

Recorded at New York City’s legendary Village Vanguard, the three-volume release (volumes 2 and 3 coming later this year) places Wilkins in the same space where generations of giants left their mark. From John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins to Bill Evans and Dexter Gordon, the Village Vanguard’s stage carries the weight of jazz history, and Wilkins approaches it with a deep awareness of that lineage. As writer Tina M. Campt notes in the album’s liner notes, the project aims to channel the room’s accumulated musical memory and transform it into a living practice of improvisation and collective listening.

Wilkins’ quartet rises to that challenge with remarkable cohesion. Pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Ryoma Takenaga, and drummer Kweku Sumbry bring sharp instincts and fearless interplay, giving the band the freedom to stretch, pivot, and build momentum in the moment. The result is a recording that feels both intimate and expansive, capturing the energy of musicians fully engaged with one another and the audience in front of them.

Raised in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, Wilkins moved to New York in 2015 to attend The Juilliard School. Once there, he quickly found mentors and collaborators who helped shape his path. Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire offered guidance early on, while pianist and composer Jason Moran brought Wilkins on tour, including performances in Moran’s tribute project In My Mind: Monk at Town Hall, 1959.

Since then, Wilkins has built an impressive résumé, working alongside artists including Solange Knowles, Gretchen Parlato, Wynton Marsalis, Gerald Clayton, Aaron Parks, and Joel Ross. Each collaboration has broadened his perspective while reinforcing the distinct voice he brings to the alto saxophone.

Live At The Village Vanguard captures that voice in its natural habitat. On the Village Vanguard stage, surrounded by decades of jazz history, Wilkins and his quartet tap into the spirit of the room while pushing their music forward, one improvisation at a time.
