Honeyboy Slim & The Bad Habits - Honeyboy Slim & The Bad Habits

Sweden's Honeyboy Slim & the Bad Habits bring the ruckus back to rhythm & blues with a self-titled album that lets the good times roll again.

Rock 'n' roll may have its roots in America, but its pulse is alive and kicking in Sweden. On their self-titled sophomore album, Honeyboy Slim & the Bad Habits, the Vetlanda/Malmö-based four-piece conjures up a raw, unfiltered revival of '50s and early '60s rhythm & blues, and they do it with the kind of sweat-soaked swagger that’s the result of hundreds and hundreds of gigs.

Formed in 2010, the band, fronted by guitar-slinging brothers Josef and Jacob Steinvall, have spent the last decade honing their chops in bars, clubs, and dives from the icy north of Lofoten to the neon haze of Las Vegas. The road is clearly in their blood, and it shows because it comes across in the studio as well, which is never an easy feat for a great live band. This record may not reinvent the wheel, but it sure knows how to keep it spinning at high speed.

Filled with nine originals and one reverent George Harrison cover of “For You Blue,” this is an album by a band that doesn’t chase trends or try to force their way into a particular scene. What they serve up is honest, energetic, and built for maximum hip shake. The riffs are greasy, the vocals grimy, and the grooves locked down with a rhythm section - Sven Andersson on bass and Linus Sollin on drums - that keep it tight without ever getting too clean.

There’s something refreshingly unpretentious about this record. It doesn’t aim for grand statements or polished perfection. Instead, Honeyboy Slim & the Bad Habits sticks to what it does best… rollicking, sweat-drenched rock 'n' roll with a blues backbone and a garage soul. It’s jukebox-ready and tailor-made for dance floors that still smell like spilled beer and cigarette smoke. If you’re craving a record that plays like a killer live set from a band that’s seen it all and still loves every damn minute of it, this one’s for you.
