Helado Negro's Phasor represents a culmination of artistic evolution, blending influences from his surroundings, experiences, and collaborations to create a rich and immersive musical journey.

Roberto Carlos Lange, who records and performs as Helado Negro, has roots in South Florida but now calls Brooklyn, NY his home. Never fully casting off his roots, his recent projects have been greatly influenced by his time spent in Marfa, Texas, particularly during the quarantine period. Originally intending to work on a multimedia project at Ballroom Marfa, Lange collaborated with visual artist Kristi Sword on Kite Symphony, a project exploring West Texas's landscape through film, live score, and sculpture.

Lange's latest album, Phasor, represents a shift in his musical style, characterized by tighter compositions that explore atmospheric themes. This album follows the trajectory set by his previous works like This Is How You Smile and Far In, with a focus on rediscovering life after quarantine. Accolades for Far In, included several Best of 2021 placements including the The New Yorker who opined, “This groovy record is a meditative ode to nature; the songs, which branch off into pop, folk, and even light disco sounds, are inspired by changes in scenery... Lange’s singing lends the project a radiant composure," and Pitchfork who noted “Far In is Lange’s most accessible record yet... the album is an invitation into his orbit, a beacon of light beamed out into the universe, drawing you in towards its warmth.”

The inspiration for his new album Phasor came during Lange's visit to Salvatore Matirano's SAL MAR machine, a synthesizer generating music generatively. This experience sparked Lange's creative process, emphasizing the importance of curiosity and exploration. Crafted in his Asheville, North Carolina studio, the new album draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, with contributions from Lange's wife and frequent collaborator, Kristi Sword, who provided the album's artwork. In essence, the album encapsulates Lange's artistic evolution, blending influences from his experiences, collaborations, and surroundings into a cohesive musical journey.
