Hatebreed unleash hardcore fury and thrash muscle on Fatal Paradox, delivering punishing anthems with producer Zeuss and a guest appearance from Obituary’s John Tardy.

Six years between albums gives a band plenty of time to build up something to shout about. Hatebreed put that accumulated pressure to work on Fatal Paradox, an 11-song collision of hardcore, thrash, and the stubborn determination that has powered the Connecticut band for three decades. Their ninth full-length and first for BLKIIBLK Records reunites them with longtime producer Chris “Zeuss” Harris for the follow-up to 2020’s Weight Of The False Self.

Opening track “Kill Count Increase” wastes little time with introductions. Fast riffs, punishing rhythms, and Jamey Jasta’s bark deliver an immediate reminder of the band’s ability to turn a short song into a room-wide release of aggression. “It’s straightforward, in-your-face Hatebreed. Fast. Hard,” Jasta says. “Total Invincible” draws from the same thrash vocabulary, while “The Carrion Choir” and “Truth Is A Lion” lean into the band’s hardcore foundations. Obituary vocalist John Tardy joins the attack on “Sacrifice Season,” bringing another unmistakable voice into the mix.

Beneath that aggression sits a subject familiar to anyone who has faced a decision with consequences in every direction. Discussing the album’s title, Jasta describes the risks that come with standing against someone or something, and the sense of purpose that can make those risks worth taking. The title track confronts manipulation, division, and the human cost of choosing sides. Its anger has a target: the forces that demand allegiance while leaving others to pay the price.

Behind the recording is a working relationship built over years. Jasta describes Zeuss as practically another member of Hatebreed, a collaborator whose understanding of the musicians allows them to push songs further. He connects the excitement surrounding “Decisions Become Destinies” to the feeling of creating enduring staples such as “I Will Be Heard” and “Destroy Everything.”

That combination of trust, confrontation, and collective release runs through the story of Fatal Paradox. Hatebreed give frustration somewhere to go, with songs built to be shouted back by people who could use an outlet.
