San Antonio punk band Fea come out swinging on The Nerve, a nine-song blast of confrontation, frustration and hard-earned resolve. Four years in the making, the album tackles toxic relationships, gender-based violence, inequality and the ways people are pressured into silence, all delivered with the urgency and bite that have defined the band from the beginning.

Fea formed in 2015 around former Girl in a Coma members Phanie Diaz and Jenn Alva, and The Nerve arrives after a period of significant change for the band. The loss of former member Sofi, the arrival of guitarist Adrian Conner and vocalist Letty Martinez, and the disruption of the pandemic all helped shape the record. Martinez's arrival proved particularly important, opening up a new chapter in the band's songwriting.

That sense of finding the courage to speak runs throughout The Nerve. “Careful” takes aim at the intimidation that keeps people quiet, while “Stay In Your Lane” pushes back against the expectations placed on women and anyone who refuses to fit neatly into somebody else's idea of who they should be. Elsewhere, the Spanish-language “Paco” turns deeply personal, inspired by the death of Martinez's cousin.

The album moves fast, packing its nine tracks into just 24 minutes, but Fea leave plenty behind in that short running time. Songs including “Time,” “Resurrection,” “Poison,” “Reckless” and “Lessons” extend the record's examination of survival, anger and the process of reclaiming control after difficult experiences.

There's also humor and cultural commentary mixed into the confrontation, keeping The Nerve from becoming one-dimensional. Fea understand that punk can challenge, provoke and still be fun, and that combination gives the record much of its personality.

With The Nerve, Fea turn personal experience into something communal, making a record for anyone who's ever been told to keep quiet, stay in line or accept something they knew wasn't right. Their answer is nine songs delivered at full volume.
