Diana Krall - The Look Of Love (25th Anniversary Edition)

Diana Krall’s platinum-selling The Look Of Love turns 25 with five bonus tracks alongside the late-night ballads and bossa novas that made it a crossover hit.

A singer can make “Cry Me A River” sound like a closing argument. Diana Krall makes it sound like a conversation that ended hours ago and is still going on in her head. That’s the kind of thing she does so well on The Look Of Love, her 2001 breakthrough, which Verve revisits with a 25th anniversary edition.

Producer Tommy LiPuma and arranger Claus Ogerman gave Krall the London Symphony Orchestra to work with, and some of the best moments come when she lets the strings finish a thought. You can hear it in “Love Letters,” where she leaves enough room between lines for the melody to linger. On the title track, the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song made famous by Dusty Springfield, Krall lets the bossa nova rhythm do the flirting. The Gershwins’ “‘S Wonderful” opens the album with a little more bounce, while “The Night We Called It A Day” feels like it could have been recorded after everyone else went home.

The album went platinum in the U.S. and won Album of the Year at the 2002 Juno Awards. Engineer Al Schmitt took home a Grammy for his work on it, and you can hear why in the way Krall’s voice and piano hold their place even when the full orchestra comes in.

The deluxe CD adds five bonus tracks, including an alternate take of the original closer, “Maybe You’ll Be There,” and a live “I Love Being Here With You” from the vault. There’s also “Charmed Life,” the holiday swing of “The Man With The Bag,” and the Gershwins’ “But Not For Me,” which made its digital debut ahead of the reissue. It’s the alternate “Maybe You’ll Be There” that sends you straight back to the original. By then you know how Krall sings the song, and you want to hear what she does with it the next time around.

There’s something especially satisfying about hearing Diana Krall take another pass at “Maybe You’ll Be There.” A ballad built around the possibility of seeing someone again turns out to be a lovely way to end an anniversary edition.
