Deep Purple crank up the volume on SPLAT!, delivering one of their heaviest and most ambitious albums in years.
Deep Purple have spent nearly six decades helping define hard rock, but SPLAT! makes it clear they remain focused on what's next. The album reconnects with the power, intensity, and adventurous spirit that first made them legends while sounding very much like a band operating in the present tense.
Recorded together in the studio and once again produced by Bob Ezrin, SPLAT! is being described as Deep Purple's heaviest album in years. That energy runs throughout the record, from the thunderous interplay between drummer Ian Paice, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Don Airey, guitarist Simon McBride, and frontman Ian Gillan to the sense that the band is still challenging itself creatively.
The album's central concept originated with Gillan and explores the end of humanity, not through a traditional apocalypse narrative, but as a transformation beyond physical existence. It's a philosophical idea that fits a band that has always looked beyond the boundaries of conventional hard rock. As Gillan puts it, "Where we are now with this incarnation of Deep Purple feels very much like a very 'now' version of Deep Purple as it was in the seventies."
That balance between honoring the past and embracing the present has defined the group's recent output. From NOW What?! and inFinite through Whoosh! and Turning To Crime, Deep Purple has enjoyed one of the most productive late-career runs in rock. The arrival of McBride following the departure of longtime guitarist Steve Morse brought a renewed spark to the lineup, while Ezrin has helped channel that chemistry into a series of albums that continue to connect with audiences around the world.
For a band that has sold more than 100 million records, earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and influenced generations of musicians, there would be little left to prove. Yet SPLAT! sounds like the work of a group still driven by curiosity, ambition, and a love of making music together. Decades after helping write the blueprint for hard rock, Deep Purple remains committed to expanding it.
