Chelsea Wolfe returns with The Dark, a striking new album that pulls together the heaviness, atmosphere and stark beauty that have defined her music while opening another chapter in her nearly two-decade career.

Following 2024’s She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, Wolfe shifts away from some of that record’s electronic and industrial textures and reconnects with a slow-burning rock sound. Many of the songs began as stripped-down acoustic guitar and piano sketches before growing into the dense, dramatic arrangements heard on the finished album.

Produced by Wolfe alongside Jennifer Decilveo and longtime collaborator Ben Chisholm, The Dark centers on transformation, letting go and confronting the parts of ourselves we might otherwise avoid. Wolfe describes the idea at its heart as becoming “the darkest thing in the woods,” using darkness as a place where change and growth can begin.

Across ten tracks, Wolfe moves between brooding folk, towering guitars and moments of outright heaviness. “Seethe” surges forward with an urgent rock pulse, while “Swallower” features a guitar solo from Queens of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen. “Death Is Not The End” begins as a spare acoustic meditation before erupting with guitar from Nine Inch Nails’ Robin Finck. Other contributors include bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and drummer Matt Chamberlain.

Songs including “Cold,” “Halo,” “Turn the Key” and the title track explore Wolfe’s familiar territory of memory, grief, desire and mysticism, but The Dark finds her delivering it with a heavier and more immediate attack. The result is an album where quiet passages can suddenly give way to crushing guitars, and beauty and unease are rarely far apart.

With The Dark, Chelsea Wolfe continues to find new possibilities within the shadowy world she has spent her career creating, emerging with one of her boldest and most powerful records yet.
