Bob Dylan - The Bootleg Series Vol. 18: Through The Open Window, 1956-1963

Through The Open Window captures Bob Dylan’s transformation from a raw Midwestern troubadour to the voice of a generation, offering an intimate, revelatory look at the songs and moments that shaped his early rise.

The next chapter in the award-winning Bootleg Series, Through The Open Window traces Bob Dylan’s evolution from a restless kid in Minnesota to a defining voice of the Greenwich Village folk scene. Spanning the early 1960s, this remarkable collection captures the moment Dylan’s songwriting and performance matured into the work that would forever change American music.

The set gathers rare Columbia outtakes and intimate recordings made in clubs, friends’ apartments, and late-night jam sessions in long-forgotten New York haunts. Many of these performances have never been heard before, while others surface here for the first time in pristine quality.

At its heart, Through The Open Window documents Dylan’s transformation of traditional folk and loose lyrical sketches into timeless anthems like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” The collection culminates with a complete, previously unreleased recording of Dylan’s legendary Carnegie Hall concert from October 26, 1963, a night that marked both the height of his folk-era fame and the start of something much larger.

In his 125-page essay, author and historian Sean Wilentz writes, “Of that time and those places, this collection is just a fragment. Even so, as an aural record of an artist becoming himself—or in Dylan’s case, his first of many artistic selves—the collection aims to collapse time and space, not as a nostalgic reverie but as a living connection between the past and the present.”

The 8CD Deluxe Edition includes 139 tracks, featuring 48 never-before-released performances and 38 super-rare cuts, alongside a hardcover book filled with Wilentz’s extensive notes and over 100 rare photos. The 2CD and 4LP highlight editions include 42 tracks, 18 of which are completely unreleased. Together, they offer a vivid portrait of Dylan’s early years, when his songs first began to echo far beyond the Village streets where they were born.
