Black Lung’s Forever Beyond delivers heavy, melodic stoner doom fueled by political unease and muscular, hook-driven riffs.
On Forever Beyond, Black Lung sound fully locked in and unapologetically alive, channeling stoner doom and psychedelia into songs that feel heavy, melodic, and strangely uplifting all at once. The Baltimore trio have spent a decade refining their sound, and here it pays off in tight, hook-forward tracks that hit with purpose rather than sheer force.
What separates Forever Beyond from the pack is its sense of motion. The riffs move, the rhythms breathe, and the melodies linger. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Dave Cavalier delivers lines with conviction, cutting through fuzz-drenched guitars and deep, driving drums with a blues-tinged authority that anchors the record.
Lyrically, the album taps into the tension of the moment. Anger and defiance surface as reactions to political upheaval in the U.S., with themes touching on fascism, blind nationalism, and corporate power. The tone never collapses into despair. Instead, Black Lung push forward with clarity and resolve, pairing sharp commentary with songs built to connect.
The band’s roots run back to early 2014, when guitarist and organ player Adam Bufano and drummer Elias Schutzman branched off from Baltimore psych-rock staples the Flying Eyes to form a heavier, more stripped-down project with Cavalier. Since then, Black Lung have carved out their own lane, blending thick guitar tones, propulsive grooves, and vocals that hit the mark every time.
That evolution was already evident on Dark Waves, recorded during the pandemic, when the band began shedding earlier constraints and opening up their sound. Forever Beyond feels like the next logical step, confident, focused, and energized. It rages where it needs to rage, but it also finds joy in the act of pushing back, proving that heavy music can still feel vital, melodic, and defiant without losing its edge.
