Bandits On The Run's Rough Magic blends three-part harmonies, inventive instrumentation, and theatrical storytelling into a genre-defying collection all its own.

With Rough Magic, Bandits On The Run continue to prove that some of the most distinctive music can emerge from the most unexpected beginnings. Formed after a chance encounter while busking in the New York City subway system, the Brooklyn-based trio of Adrian Blake Enscoe, Sydney Shepherd, and Regina Strayhorn have spent years turning unconventional instrumentation, theatrical storytelling, and three-part harmonies into a sound that defies easy categorization.

Drawing from folk, Americana, indie pop, and theatrical traditions, Rough Magic thrives on the chemistry between its three members. Guitars, cello, accordion, suitcase drums, toy instruments, and the occasional megaphone weave through songs that feel both intimate and expansive. Just as important is the band's unique approach to vocals, with all three members trading lead duties and blending together in harmonies that have become one of their defining strengths.

The album reflects the same adventurous spirit that has fueled the band's rise. Rather than settling into a single style, the band continue to blur musical boundaries, creating songs that feel equally at home in a folk club, a theater, or on a festival stage. It's a natural extension of a group that has built its reputation on spontaneity, imagination, and an unmistakable sense of connection.

That connection has earned them opportunities to perform on increasingly larger stages. Their harmonies have filled venues while opening for the Wood Brothers on tour, and they've appeared at festivals including AmericanaFest, Cambridge Folk Festival, Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, Blissfest, Summerfest, and Singapore's Formula 1 Grand Prix festivities. Their music has also found audiences through NPR's Tiny Desk platform, Netflix's Ask the StoryBots, and the feature film The Same Storm.

Storytelling remains central to everything Bandits On The Run create, and Rough Magic was built by artists whose creative lives stretch well beyond traditional band boundaries. Their theatrical instincts previously inspired The Shakespeare Tapes, a project born from music written for a stage adaptation of As You Like It. Today, the trio continues to develop new musical theater works, including a stage adaptation of What's Eating Gilbert Grape alongside novelist and screenwriter Peter Hedges and collaborator Christopher Sears, as well as Yukon Ho, an original musical inspired by Black prospectors during the Alaskan Gold Rush.

Each member brings a unique perspective to the collaboration. Enscoe appeared on Broadway in Swept Away and portrays Austin Dickinson in the Apple TV+ series Dickinson. Shepherd continues to build an impressive theater career, while Strayhorn balances performing with casting work for film and television and a parallel career as a photographer.

What makes Rough Magic resonate is the same quality that first brought the band together: a willingness to follow curiosity wherever it leads. Whether performing on a crowded subway platform, writing musicals, or creating ambitious new recordings, Bandits On The Run approach every project with a sense of adventure.
