As Everything Unfolds push into darker territory on Did You Ask To Be Set Free?, mapping the pull between escape and reality with a sound that never settles.

Did You Ask To Be Set Free? finds As Everything Unfolds pushing past the point where most bands would try to clean things up. Instead, they lean into the mess.

Formed in Buckinghamshire, England and built from years of touring, lineup shifts, and gradual momentum, the band broke through with 2021's Within Each Lies The Other and widened their reach in 2023 with Ultraviolet. Both records balanced melody and weight, but this new one moves differently. It doesn’t reach for uplift or easy catharsis. It sits in the uncomfortable middle and lets it play out.

Written during a period marked by grief, emotional whiplash, and creative disruption, Did You Ask To Be Set Free? tracks a shift from stability into something far less certain. What starts as a space of control and forward motion gives way to numbness, disorientation, and the kind of internal drift that’s hard to name while it’s happening. The album doesn’t rush to fix that. It documents it.

There’s a central thread running through the album built around escapism, specifically the idea of maladaptive daydreaming as both protection and liability. That push and pull shows up everywhere. Fantasy offers distance from pain, but it also delays the work of facing it. The songs circle that tension, never quite landing on a clear answer.

Lyrically, the band gets more direct without losing the sense of fragmentation that defines their sound. Themes of addiction, burnout, strained relationships, and self-sacrifice come through in pieces rather than declarations. It feels lived-in without spelling everything out, closer to how these things actually register in real time.

Musically, the shifts mirror that internal movement. Did You Ask To Be Set Free? expands and contracts, pulling from cinematic textures, literary influence, and a more subconscious writing approach. Songs don’t stay in one place for long. They evolve, sometimes abruptly, sometimes quietly, reflecting change as it happens rather than smoothing it over.

Charlie Rolfe’s vocal performance anchors the whole thing. She moves between clarity and collapse, carrying both the control and the unraveling without forcing either one. It’s the through-line that keeps the album grounded even when everything else feels unstable.

What Did You Ask To Be Set Free? ultimately lands on is less a conclusion and more a snapshot of transition. It captures the uneasy process of continuing on after things have shifted, when there isn’t a clear way forward and no guarantee that freedom looks the way you expected.
