Anna Graves turns a decade of wrong turns, hard lessons and starting over into America’s Greatest Burnout, her debut album for Rounder Records. Raised on a farm in Minnesota, Graves left home chasing a music career, only to eventually find herself drawn back to where she started. That journey provides the backbone for an album about figuring out what success actually means when the version you once imagined doesn’t quite work out.

Produced by Davis Naish (Maggie Rose, Eric Church), America’s Greatest Burnout brings together folk, country and pop across 12 songs that play like chapters from Graves’ life. “Damn In Love,” “Hollow Bones,” “Ashes & Smoke,” “Burn On” and the title track find her writing with a mix of vulnerability, humor and hard-earned perspective. The sessions also brought in an impressive group of players, including Rob Humphreys, Rob McNelley and longtime Bruce Springsteen pedal steel guitarist Marty Rifkin.

Graves describes America’s Greatest Burnout as the story of “falling off the horse and picking yourself back up again as an adult,” an especially fitting metaphor for someone who grew up around horses and now helps foster rescues back home in Minnesota. After years spent pursuing the next big break, she discovered there was plenty worth writing about in the place she once couldn’t wait to leave.

That homecoming comes full circle on “Minnesota,” one of the album’s most personal moments, while the closing “Honkie Was a Wiseman” brings the record back to family and the experiences that shaped her. It makes America’s Greatest Burnout an introduction to Anna Graves, but also a record about rediscovering the person she was before anybody else told her who she was supposed to become.
