Anderson .Paak and Cordae turn a productive friendship into a full album partnership on Heavy Is The Crown, pairing .Paak’s soulful vocals and rhythmic instincts with Cordae’s conversational rhymes. Their first joint album explores the responsibilities that accompany success, with plenty of room for the humor that has helped make their collaborations so appealing.

The connection dates back to “RNP,” a standout from Cordae’s 2019 debut, The Lost Boy. The pair continued trading verses and playing off each other on “Two Tens” and “Summer Drop,” developing a rapport that made a longer project a natural next step. Heavy Is The Crown gives that exchange room to grow, bringing two distinct personalities into a shared conversation.

The title speaks to the demands both artists face as providers for their families. Career achievements bring expectations, and supporting the people closest to them carries its own pressures. Those concerns give the project its emotional foundation, while their easy camaraderie leaves space for laughter alongside the reflection. .Paak’s expressive delivery complements Cordae’s direct approach to storytelling, giving each a partner who can respond, challenge, and join in the joke.

That sense of humor extends to the cover, which borrows from the Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly comedy Step Brothers. It’s a fitting reference for an album built around a friendship that thrives on mutual encouragement and a willingness to be ridiculous together.

With Heavy Is The Crown, Anderson .Paak and Cordae give a familiar phrase a personal meaning: making something of yourself also means showing up for the people who depend on you. Having a friend who understands the responsibility helps.
