Alison Goldfrapp’s Flux merges luminous synth-pop and raw intimacy, marking a fearless new chapter from one of pop’s most inventive voices.
Alison Goldfrapp returns with Flux, her second solo album and a striking leap forward from the lush, futuristic pop she unveiled on 2023’s The Love Invention. Long celebrated for her fearless reinvention, the British singer, songwriter, and visual auteur first rose to prominence as one half of the chart-topping, Mercury Prize–nominated duo Goldfrapp, whose seven studio albums, from the cinematic trip-hop of Felt Mountain to the disco-laced euphoria of Supernature, sold millions worldwide and cemented her as one of pop’s most visionary voices.
With Flux, Goldfrapp pushes deeper into her own world, teaming with producer Richard X and synth-pop craftsman Stefan Storm to create a record that lives in contrasts: romantic and ethereal one moment, tough and sensual the next. “There’s a lot of light and shade,” she says, and that balance shines across the tracklist. Lead single “Find Xanadu” is an instant sugar-rush, already drawing buzz from fans and critics alike. The '80s-infused “Cinnamon Light” glows with nostalgia, “Play It (Shine Like A Nova Star)” spins house beats into shimmering revelation, and “Hey Hi Hello” captures the ache and hope of letting go. “Reverberotic,” a cinematic blend of strings and synths, was named one of Billboard’s Queer Jams of the Week and has been championed by BrooklynVegan, Queerty, Prelude Press, and 101X as one of this year's essential tracks.
Goldfrapp’s voice — once swathed in layers of production — now cuts with new intimacy and clarity, drawing the listener closer to the core of each song. That raw connection was shaped in part by her time writing in Stockholm, where the quiet beauty of the city seeped into the music. “Every day I’d look out at a church, hear the bells ring, and then head to the studio. It was peaceful, and that inspired the songs,” she says.
With over 400 million streams and 200,000 sales across her Goldfrapp catalog, plus more than 15 million solo streams, Alison remains a singular force in modern pop. This summer, she takes Flux to the stage on her biggest solo shows yet, joining Scissor Sisters for a UK arena tour. For fans of Robyn, Jessie Ware, St. Vincent, Ladytron, and Róisín Murphy, Flux just might be your favorite album of the year.
