Alex Wintz’s Collage blends groove-driven modern jazz with personal reflection, capturing a guitarist settling into his voice with a band that moves as one.

Collage puts Alex Wintz front and center as both a player and a writer, with a set that leans into movement, memory, and the push and pull of life on and off the bandstand. It’s a groove-focused record that doesn’t overreach, built instead on the kind of interplay that comes from musicians who know how to listen as much as they play.

Backed by Victor Gould on piano, Matt Penman on bass, and Jimmy Macbride on drums, Wintz keeps things fluid. “Pondhop” moves with a light, forward momentum, while “Better Half” slows the pace and lets the writing breathe. Across Collage, he pulls from modern jazz, blues, and global textures without calling attention to the blend. It just sits there naturally.

There’s a personal thread running through all of it. Marriage, fatherhood, and the rhythm of touring shape the material, but Wintz doesn’t frame it in big gestures. He lets the details carry the weight. The tone of his guitar stays clean and expressive, never crowded, giving the band room to shape the direction of each piece.

Wintz’s path to this point is well documented. A California native raised in New Jersey, he came up through Berklee and Juilliard, then built his reputation working alongside players like Etienne Charles, Jeremy Pelt, and Ben Williams. He’s played the major festival circuit, from Newport Jazz Festival to Montreux Jazz Festival, and has stayed active as an educator, including his work with New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Collage lands as a clear snapshot of where Wintz is right now. Not chasing anything, not proving anything, just writing and playing with a steady sense of purpose and a band that knows how to meet him there.
