Change Of Plans captures 49 Winchester at a turning point, expanding their Appalachian sound with sharper songwriting, bigger hooks, and the confidence of a band hitting its stride.

49 Winchester have spent years turning hard miles and hometown roots into one of the most authentic success stories in modern country music. Formed by childhood friends Isaac Gibson and Chase Chafin in the small Appalachian town of Castlewood, Virginia, the band built its following the old-fashioned way, relentless touring, word-of-mouth buzz, and songs that feel real rather than manufactured. Their mix of country, Southern rock, and folk carries the weight of Appalachian storytelling without sounding trapped in its past, giving them a voice that feels both timeless and unmistakably current.

Their latest album, Change Of Plans, arrives at a moment when the band’s years of work are finally catching up with the spotlight. Recorded in just eight days with producer Dave Cobb, the album captures 49 Winchester sounding sharper, more confident, and more willing to stretch beyond the boundaries of their earlier material. There’s still a rough-hewn edge in these songs, but it’s matched by a growing sense of precision and perspective, the sound of a band learning how to expand without losing the core of who they are.

Across the album, 49 Winchester lean into themes of change, endurance, and hard-earned maturity. Some tracks hit with a full-throttle energy that pulls from rock as much as country, while others slow down long enough to let Gibson’s songwriting cut deeper. The balance gives Change Of Plans a sense of movement, as if the band is documenting not only where they came from, but where they’re headed next.

What makes 49 Winchester connect so strongly is that nothing about their rise feels calculated. From front porch jam sessions in rural Virginia to sold-out shows across the U.S. and overseas, every step has come through persistence and belief in the songs themselves. Gibson summed it up best when reflecting on how far the band has come: “We started this thing from the smallest seed possible… and by staying true to that same mindset, it finally feels like now is our time to come up.”
