JOAN SORIANO El Duque de la Bachata Born in the countryside near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Joan Soriano fashioned his first guitar from a tin can and fishing line and has never looked back. He plays steel string bachata with romance and grit. Afro-infused rhythms permeate his music, making him a favorite among dancers. Soriano was featured on the Rough Guide To Bachata, and he is the subject of a new documentary film by Adam Taub, The Duke Of Bachata, included here as a bonus DVD. 'It's a story as old as the guitar, which has been played in Santo Domingo, the first Spanish city in the New World, since before the guitar had six strings.
