The Best Of The Broadcast Performances (Reissue)

A good number of his own compositions are included, along with some popular standards and jazz classics by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Fats Waller. Some material goes beyond these boundaries, such as W.C. Handy's 'St. Louis Blues.' Contains extensive liner notes.

RODNEY WHITAKER
When We Find Ourselves Alone
Released 08/19/14  Artist Site

The ambiance on When We Find Ourselves Alone is similar to what Whitaker generated on such turn-of-the-century gems as Winter Moon, Ballads and Blues: The Brooklyn Session and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow - all recorded for small independent labels - on which the leader drew repertoire from several stylistic tributaries. Now, as then, Whitaker and company address the leader's 5 originals and 6 arrangements with an old-school feel and a 21st century attitude. They follow the time-tested jazz aesthetic, embracing the tradition of navigating the long-standing forms with individualistic tonal personalities, ebullient soulfulness and an unending will to swing.

AL JARREAU
My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke
Released 08/05/14  Artist Site

Al Jarreau and George Duke were friends long before they became household names. They began playing together in the mid-60s as Al Jarreau and the George Duke Trio. The successes of these performances are what helped to launch both their careers. George's tragic passing in 2013 inspired Al to record this loving tribute to his longtime friend.

With the exception of the fitting title track composed by Jarreau, all the tunes were written by George. Guest artists/collaborators include Gerald Albright, Stanley Clarke, Dr. John, Lalah Hathaway, Boney James, Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne, Kelly Price, Dianne Reeves, Patrice Rushen, and even George Duke.

Yolanda Duke seems to weave a magic spell on the repertoire of The Great American Songbook, making them her own. She sings them with unabashed, almost naked emotion, in her majestic contralto.

Every once and a while Ms. Duke takes flight into ranges that she would not normally venture, where she is absolutely and devastatingly beautiful. 'Luna Azul,' performed as a cha cha cha seems to exist in a rarefied realm. The haunting beauty of 'Medley Myrta Silva' is a most spine chilling bolero, especially as Ms. Duke reaches for those high notes as if she were singing an aria.

NELS CLINE SINGERS
Macroscope
Released 04/29/14  Artist Site

Macroscope, the fifth album and Mack Avenue debut by his adventurous trio the Nels Cline Singers, provides a measure of the long-running group's staggering range.

Captivating and continually surprising, the album finds the instrumental trio with the slyly deceptive name veering in one off-kilter direction only to suddenly be overwhelmed by another drastic stylistic shift, often within the space of a single tune. Serrated psychedelia becomes consumed by soulful Brasiliana, blissed-out electronica overwhelmed by garage-rock skronk.
